Yarborough Applegate Team Walks Like MADD to Support Victims of Drunk Driving

Posted: November 1, 2023

Last weekend, Yarborough Applegate rallied in support of MADD South Carolina at the nonprofit’s annual Lowcountry Walk Like MADD fundraiser that raises awareness and funds to eliminate drunk and drugged driving. In addition to taking part in the community walk at Charleston’s Hampton Park, Yarborough Applegate once again participated as the presenting sponsor.

Partner David Lail was honored during the event for his six years of service on the MADD SC board. As he rotates off of the six-year term, founding partner David Yarborough has been named to take the seat. Additionally, Lail and Yarborough co-authored a book on dram shop litigation for the SC Bar Association that donates all proceeds to MADD.

The community-driven initiative brought together drunk driving victims and their families, law enforcement agencies, citizens, and businesses who are united in their drive to create a safer Charleston and a future with no more victims. The Lowcountry event was just one of many happening over the weekend, with Mothers Against Drunk Driving chapters across the country hosting its own Walk Like MADD fundraiser.

YARBOROUGH APPLEGATE’S ANNUAL PARTNERSHIP WITH MADD SOUTH CAROLINA

For our team at Yarborough Applegate, Lowcountry Walk Like MADD is always an important capstone to our ongoing support of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) SC. For the last seven years, we have been the MADD Statewide Victim Services Sponsor. We share in MADD’s commitment to support victims of drunk driving.

“Yarborough Applegate is such an incredible part of Walk Like MADD Lowcountry each year, from the sponsorship to being a key part of the event planning and ensuring we have a great experience for everyone who comes,” says MADD Regional Executive Director Steven Burritt. “What means the most to us is that partnership extends through the whole year in how they support our work with victims of drunk and drugged driving. Because they also serve victims in the legal aspects of these tragedies, it comes through so clearly what really matters to them.”

STEADFAST IN SUPPORT OF DRUNK DRIVING VICTIMS

As lawyers for victims only, we work alongside law enforcement to hold all wrongdoers accountable for the harm caused by drunk driving.  We don’t just stop at the drunk driver—we go to the source.  Our mission is the relentless pursuit of drunk drivers and any bar, restaurant, or other alcohol retailer that plays a role in putting drunk drivers on our roads and our communities at risk. We do this work by using “dram shop” laws that enable victims to hold alcohol retailers responsible for the consequences of over-serving alcohol and enabling drunk driving.

Through our dram shop practice area, we serve victims of drunk driving and help their families secure resources necessary to move forward after a life-altering tragedy.

It’s a critical avenue for South Carolina victims of drunk driving to be aware of because if a drunk driver only carries the minimum liability insurance coverage required by state law—$25,000—it will not be enough to compensate a victim for the types of damages incurred following a drunk driving crash. By contrast, many South Carolina establishments are required to carry at least $1 million of alcohol liability insurance for these very specific tragedies.
