Yarborough Applegate discusses methadone and other opioids in client records

Posted: November 15, 2018

The National Association of Legal Assistants recently published a piece written by our own Laura Butler Peirano in their publication Facts & Findings. In the article, Laura recalls her experience at a county-run methadone clinic and rehabilitation center. There she provided methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) to clients as part of her Masters-level practicum. Later, at Yarborough Applegate, she saw the effects of methadone use with clients while working on cases involving severe, life threatening accidents and injuries.

In this article, Laura shares,

“It is important to recognize that many legal clients also have been injured, had surgery, or experience chronic pain and therefore are prescribed opioids. They may not have realized the addictive properties of the prescription. They may only use them for a brief time, or unintentional dependence may necessitate the need for MMT. This does not make clients unworthy of representation and compensation.”
