10 Years of Yarborough Applegate: Community Involvement

The year 2020 marks ten years in business here at Yarborough Applegate. Over the last decade, we’ve done a lot — from watching our employees grow both personally and professionally to making a difference in the lives of our clients and local community partners. It has been and always will be a great honor to serve you here in South Carolina, and we can’t thank you enough for ten years of support.

To celebrate, we’re spending the second half of 2020 taking a look back at the last ten years, highlighting our favorite milestones each month since Yarborough Applegate’s inception. This month, join us as we commemorate some of our most meaningful involvements throughout our community.

Camp Happy Days

Yarborough Applegate became involved with Camp Happy Days, a nonprofit that supports local children diagnosed with cancer, though Partner Douglas Jennings, who serves on the CHD Board. Douglas has generously devoted his time and energy to CHD, and has even appeared on the organization’s behalf before the SC General Assembly successfully fighting for increased funding. If you’d like to get involved with this wonderful organization, you can visit their website to become a regular, special event or camp volunteer.

Share Our Suzy

Yarborough Applegate has long been supporters of Share Our Suzy (SOS), a local nonprofit whose mission is to honor the spirit of the lake Suzy Mcgrane through raising awareness and funds to support breast cancer patients from diagnosis to remission. If you are a breast cancer patient in need of assistance or a community member interested in donating or volunteering, visit their website to learn more.

The Post & Courier’s Good Cheer Fund

We’ve been supporting The Post & Courier’s Good Cheer Fund, an annual fundraiser aimed at helping Lowcountry families who are in need through the holiday season, since 2010. To learn more about the various local nonprofits who benefit from the Fund, or to get involved this holiday season, click here.

Bowling Buddies

Yarborough Applegate has been an annual sponsor of Bowling Buddies since 2014. In partnership with the SC Bar Young Lawyers Division and the Special Olympics, Bowling Buddies pairs Special Olympics athletes with attorneys for a fun night of bowling and camaraderie. It’s an evening we look forward to every year.

Board of Architectural Review

Founder and Partner William Applegate was appointed by Mayor Joseph P. Riley to serve on the City of Charleston’s Board of Architectural Review in 2016. During his time on the Board, William helped to preserve and protect the old historic or architecturally worthy structures and quaint neighborhoods of our city.

Education

We’ve also given to and volunteered at several Lowcountry schools and education-related charities over the years, including:

North Charleston High School Basketball Team

Yarborough Applegate has been a sponsor of the North Charleston High School basketball team since 2015. Our yearly donations have provided the players with dress clothes for game days, supported training camp costs, funded team outings and assisted with the costs related to traveling to tournaments in Atlanta, Hilton Head and Chapin. We have loved watching the basketball team’s growth over Coach Christopher Brown’s leadership, and look forward to many more years of supporting the team both on and off the court.

Stall High School’s ESOL Program

Founder and Partner William Applegate, a fluent Spanish speaker, often works in Hispanic communities throughout Charleston, so when we learned that about 30% of Stall High School’s students speak English as a Second Language, and we were honored to donate to the ESOL Program in 2017. Our donation helped to support a handful of important initiatives, ranging from sending students on field trips to publishing a book of their short stories to providing 50 new English-to-Spanish dictionaries to further aid ESOL teachers in the classroom.

Sullivan’s Island Elementary School

We chose SIES as our 2016 corporate benefactor, donating money to support the school in the areas of teacher salaries, instructional and educational supplies, as well as helping to maintain smaller class sizes, hire skilled faculty and staff and increase funding for the arts, foreign language, science, music and computer technology classes.
