Yarborough Applegate Welcomes New Team Member Chris Bryant

Posted: April 27, 2017

Yarborough Applegate is excited to welcome its newest attorney, Christopher J. Bryant. Chris comes to us with a strong background as a federal law clerk at the trial and appellate levels, bringing a valuable perspective to the team.

Originally from the Midwest, Chris has spent most of this adult life in the Carolinas. Chris received his bachelor’s and juris doctorate degrees from Duke University. After receiving his A.B. in Economics, Chris joined Teach for America (TFA). Chris taught 7th-grade special education in Durham Public Schools for two years and worked as an assistant baseball and soccer coach. After his two-year TFA commitment, Chris taught at a K-8 public charter school in Durham and started the school’s first music program.

While in law school, Chris was elected the first African American Editor in Chief of the Duke Law Journal. He also volunteered as an intake intern for Legal Aid of North Carolina, represented clients as a student attorney in the Start-Up Ventures Clinic, participated in Moot Court, and won 1st Place in the Louis Jackson National Student Memorial Writing Competition in Employment and Labor Law.

Before joining Yarborough Applegate, Chris served as a clerk for Judge James A. Wynn, Jr. on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and Judge Richard M. Gergel on the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina. Both judges encouraged Chris to begin his practice in the Carolinas, and Chris’s experience clerking for Judge Gergel during the United States v. Dylann Storm Roof trial strongly influenced his decision to remain in Charleston.

When he is not working, Chris enjoys spending time with his dog, Bowser, singing and playing guitar, and visiting Folly Beach. Chris also serves on the Duke Law Alumni Association Board of Directors and the board of Charleston Legal Access, a nonprofit law firm representing modest-means clients who do not make enough to pay standard rates for an attorney and are unable to attain contingency-fee representation.
