Why We Walked Like MADD on March 19

Posted: March 21, 2022

On March 19, the Yarborough Applegate team once again laced up our sneakers and supported MADD South Carolina by participating in Lowcountry Walk Like MADD. The annual event, just one of many happening across the country, raises awareness and funds to eliminate drunk and drugged driving. Yarborough Applegate is proud to be Lowcountry Walk Like MADD’s Presenting Sponsor.

Our team’s involvement in the fundraising walk is just one of the ways we support Mothers Against Drunk Driving, or MADD, throughout the year. Our firm and MADD are united by our shared commitment to supporting victims of drunk driving—and doing everything we can to help keep drunk drivers off the road in the first place. Yarborough Applegate partner David Lail is a MADD board member, and all proceeds from sales of the book Lail co-authored with founding partner David Yarborough, Dram Shop Litigation: A Practice Guide, benefit MADD.

“Yarborough Applegate has had a huge impact on our ability to work on our life-saving mission in South Carolina for years now by being our Victim Services Sponsor and Presenting Sponsor for our Walk Like MADD events in the Lowcountry and Columbia,” says MADD Regional Executive Director Steven Burritt. “We love working with corporate partners who truly understand our work, and because Yarborough Applegate serves victims of drunk and drugged drivers like we do, we all see the tragic consequences and speak the same language about why we need to make things better.”

Walk Like MADD is an annual event that raises funds via sponsorship, registrations, and individual donations. Yarborough Applegate’s walk team is Lawyers for Victims. Last weekend’s fundraising walk was rescheduled from last fall, as the 2021 walk was postponed due to Covid-19 precautions. The official 2022 Lowcountry Walk Like MADD will be held this fall. YARBOROUGH APPLEGATE’S COMMITMENT TO VICTIMS

When drunk driving results in tragedy, it’s important for victims and their families to understand all their options for recourse. Many know they can seek to hold the negligent drunk driver responsible in criminal court or by filing a claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance company for damages. But if that drunk driver has only the minimum liability insurance coverage that’s required by state law, it may not be enough to compensate a victim for damages.

Enter dram shop litigation, a crucial avenue for victims. Dram shop litigation can hold a bar, restaurant, or other alcohol retailer responsible for the role it played in the drunk driving accident. In South Carolina, many establishments are required to carry at least $1 million worth of alcohol liability insurance.

Dram shop cases are notoriously difficult, and that’s why an experienced dram shop attorney should be consulted in every drunk driving crash. In the last year alone, Yarborough Applegate has recorded more than in $54 million in verdicts, judgments, and settlements for victims of drunk driving, including a $3.1 million jury verdict for a man who was seriously injured by an underage drunk driver who illegally purchased beer from a convenience store.
