Reflecting on 2024: a Year of Legal Leadership

Posted: December 20, 2024

As we celebrate the joy of the holiday season and reflect on the past year, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our passionate team, our incredible co-counsel and industry colleagues, and our deserving clients who allow us to do what we love every day. Next year will mark 15 years of Yarborough Applegate. As we celebrate this milestone, we look forward to continuing to build on our legacy of being unwavering advocates for the injured and making meaningful contributions to the legal field and our community.

Across the past decade and a half, we have achieved so much as a firm, from landmark jury verdicts to impactful case outcomes that should live on for years to come. But above all, we are endlessly proud of the team we have built—a dynamic and dedicated collective of attorneys, paralegals, and office staff who work together to realize great outcomes for our clients. We hope you will join us as we look back on the past year and the ways our people have been leaders in our field and worked to make a difference.

AUTHORSHIP OF BOOKS AND ARTICLES

In January, attorneys Liam Duffy and John Dodds released a book addressing the issue of written discovery obstruction: Dealing with Objections to Written Discovery: The Modern Approach to Discovery Objections in South Carolina State & Federal Courts. The first-of-its-kind title is proving to be an invaluable asset in helping trial lawyers across the state navigate disputes in civil litigation.

Our attorneys also shared insights on key topics in articles for leading trial publications, with Duffy covering strategies for conveying wrongful death damages in the American Association for Justice’s Trial magazine, and surveying the rise of AI in LegalTech in the cover story for South Carolina Association for Justice’s spring edition of the Justice Bulletin. In August, attorney Alex Heaton penned an article for South Carolina Bar’s SC Lawyer magazine breaking down the ways she and the Shaw vs. Amazon trial team successfully pushed back on the tech giant’s independent contractor defense.

PRESENTATIONS AND INTERVIEWS WITH LEGAL PEERS

Throughout the year, our people continued to contribute to ongoing education and conversations in the legal landscape with presentations across the country. Attorneys drew on their own experience as trial lawyers in talks to the Hilton Head Island Bar Association, Strafford CLE Webinar, and during SCAJ programming. In the spring, Duffy again planned SCAJ’s Young Lawyers Seminar, with partner David Yarborough speaking on bad faith insurance and Perry Buckner giving a talk on joint and several liability.

Some opportunities took us far beyond our home state of South Carolina, with partner William Applegate invited to speak on the Amazon case at the Attorney Information Exchange Group’s (AIEG) Spring Seminar in Chicago. Over the summer, Heaton headed to the West Coast to present at Trial Lawyers University in California. And this month, Duffy shared insights at SCAJ’s Advanced Trial Lawyers College in Atlanta and at the Louisiana Association for Justice’s “Masters in Trial” CLE in New Orleans.

We also had the opportunity to sit down and share stories with peers on the Great Trials Podcast and for the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys’ Association’s magazine, The DefenseLine.

CONTINUED INVESTMENTS IN COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

It is an honor to work in an industry that enables us to contribute to safer communities, and this year, as always, we enjoyed working alongside causes and groups that make a real difference. In September, partner David Lail continued his professional engagement with law enforcement when he trained South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) agents on investigating dram shop cases.

Throughout the year, we’ve also been proud to support several local nonprofits, including Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), WakeUp Carolina, and many others. Read more about our ongoing community partners here.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM YARBOROUGH APPLEGATE

What a year it has been! Especially during this time of reflection, we want to recognize that serving the public—and having the opportunity to work in a field we love—is a true privilege. We would like to thank all who have supported us along the way. On behalf of our team, we wish you a very happy holiday season and a joyful new year.
